Dungeons & Dragons Basic Game

Modern Hobby Strategy Games

The Dungeons & Dragons Basic Game is an introductory version of the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game, packaged in the form of a board game. The original game was released in 2004 by Wizards of the Coast and designed by Jonathan Tweet, one of the Dungeons & Dragons 3rd edition designers, with a new version released in September 2006. It is a simplified version that stays fully compatible with the full Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 game, and characters built for it can be carried over into the full game. Players choose from ready-made character booklets, each paired with a corresponding miniature and its own rules and abilities, while a separate Dungeon Master booklet covers encounters, monsters and the rules needed to run them. The game is designed to be playable with minimal preparation, and several 3.5 rules were simplified for accessibility, for example counting diagonal movement as two squares instead of one and a half, and dropping critical hits and inventory weight tracking.
