Dead of Winter: A Cross Roads Game

Modern Hobby Strategy Games

Dead of Winter is a semi-cooperative survival strategy board game for two to five players, designed by Jonathan Gilmour and Isaac Vega and published by Plaid Hat Games in 2014. Set in a post-apocalyptic, zombie-infested colony, the game casts players as faction leaders who must work together to keep the colony supplied and defended against the undead, managing scarce resources while sending colonists out on risky excursions. Its semi-cooperative structure comes from each player also holding an individual, secret win condition that they must satisfy alongside or sometimes at odds with the group's shared survival goal, creating tension over whether every player is fully trustworthy. This blend of shared crisis management, resource scarcity, and hidden personal agendas, layered onto a strategic board game framework, distinguishes Dead of Winter within the broader genre of cooperative survival games.
