Dark Souls: The Board Game is a cooperative miniatures-based exploration game for one to four players, designed and published by the British company Steamforged Games and released in April 2017. Players take on the roles of character classes drawn from FromSoftware's Dark Souls video game series, exploring dungeon tiles to fight monsters and bosses, gather treasure and manage equipment in combat resolved through card-based mechanics rather than dice alone. Its miniatures were sculpted to depict player characters and enemies from Dark Souls, Dark Souls II and Dark Souls III, released respectively in 2011, 2014 and 2016. The adaptation originated when designer Mat Hart, then prototyping other dungeon-crawler concepts, connected with a contact at Bandai Namco Entertainment who was looking for a studio to create an official board game based on the Dark Souls franchise; the resulting project was funded through a Kickstarter campaign in April 2016 that raised more than 3.7 million pounds.
