Citadel of Blood

Modern Hobby Strategy Games

Citadel of Blood, subtitled Fantastic Adventure in the Fortress of Evil, is a cooperative fantasy dungeon crawl board game for one to six players published by Simulations Publications, Inc. (SPI) in 1980. It began life as a variant built on the mechanics of SPI's earlier dungeon crawl game Deathmaze, originally designed by Greg Costikyan and Redmond A. Simonsen, before Eric Smith reworked and repackaged the system as its own standalone title. Players guide adventurers through a maze of dungeon rooms and corridors represented on a grid map, fighting monsters, collecting treasure and searching for a way out of the fortress, a format that anticipated the tile and card based dungeon crawl board games that became far more common in the hobby decades later.
