Blue Moon (game)

Modern Hobby Strategy Games

Blue Moon is a two-player expandable card game designed by Reiner Knizia, first published in Germany by Kosmos in 2004 and released in English by Fantasy Flight Games. Each player controls one of several fantasy factions, beginning with the Vulca and Hoax decks of thirty cards plus a leader card, and attempts to attract a series of dragons by playing character cards that outweigh the opponent's total in matching resources, most often earth and fire. A compact game board and three dragon tokens track which dragons have been claimed, and a player wins by attracting enough dragons before running out of cards. The system published 344 cards across its original run, spread over multiple faction decks that could be bought individually, letting players build distinct decks around each faction's own mechanics rather than drafting from a single shared pool. Its short, tactical duels and modular faction design made it a notable example of the expandable, non-collectible card game format in the 2000s.
