Advanced Civilization is an expansion for the 1980 board game Civilization, published by Avalon Hill in 1991 for two to eight players who already own the base game. It layers new commodity cards, calamity cards and civilization cards onto the original trading and development system, while clarifying and simplifying several of the base rules, including modified mechanics for negotiating trades between players. Like its parent game, Advanced Civilization has players guide an ancient civilization through trade, growth and periodic calamities on a map of the ancient Mediterranean and Near East, competing to accumulate civilization advances rather than through direct military conquest. Because ownership of the original Civilization is required to play, Advanced Civilization functions less as a standalone title than as a mature, expanded edition of the base game's trading and development system, and it remains distinct from the unrelated 2002 Eagle Games release Sid Meier's Civilization: The Boardgame, which shares only a name and a broad historical theme.
