Kursk: Operation Zitadelle

Modern Conquest and War Games

Kursk: Operation Zitadelle is a board wargame that Simulations Publications Inc., better known as SPI, brought out in 1971. Its subject is the Battle of Kursk, the huge tank battle fought on the Eastern Front during the Second World War, and it holds the distinction of being the first wargame to simulate that battle. As a wargame it invites players to take the opposing sides and replay the clash in miniature. The title uses the German code name for the offensive, Zitadelle, which is the name by which the operation is usually known in histories of the campaign. It belongs to the early generation of conflict simulations that SPI published for the growing hobby audience, and it remains a point of reference for anyone tracing how the Kursk battle came to be represented in tabletop form.
