Desmoche is a rummy-family card game of Nicaraguan origin, usually played for small stakes among two to four players with a standard fifty-two card French-suited deck. Like other members of the rummy family, such as Conquian and gin rummy, the central objective is to build valid combinations of cards, either runs of consecutive cards in the same suit or sets of matching rank, and Desmoche follows this pattern closely while keeping its own particular rules for melding and scoring. To win a hand, a player must lay down exactly ten cards on the table arranged into valid runs or sets, which requires careful memory of what has already been discarded and picked up by opponents over the course of play. Card game historians believe Desmoche most likely developed in Nicaragua during the first half of the twentieth century, making it a relatively young addition to the broader rummy family even though the family itself has older roots elsewhere. A typical round of Desmoche takes around twenty minutes to play, and the game rewards a mix of memory, planning and modest betting strategy rather than pure chance.
