500 rum

500 rum, also called Michigan rummy or five hundred rum, is a popular American variant of rummy built around melding cards into sets of matching rank or sequential runs of the same suit. It accommodates two to eight players, though the game plays best with three to five at the table. What sets it apart from more basic rummy variants is that a player scores the point value of every meld they lay down rather than simply eliminating cards from hand, so the running score reflects the actual cards played rather than only who empties their hand first. Before a player may lay down any meld at all, their very first meld of the game must total at least thirty points, a threshold meant to slow early scoring and reward a well-planned hand. Each round's score for a player equals the value of the cards they successfully melded onto the table minus the value of any cards still left unplayed in their hand at the end of that round, so holding high-value cards too long carries a real penalty. Play continues across repeated rounds until one player is the first to reach a running total of five hundred points, at which point that player wins the game outright.
