Päckchen

Matching and Shedding Card Games

Päckchen is a German patience (solitaire) card game played with a single standard fifty two card deck. The four aces are set out as foundation cards and the remaining forty eight cards are dealt into thirteen packets of four cards each. From there a player builds ascending suited sequences, running from two through king, on top of each ace, and may only move a card onto another packet when it matches that packet's top card in suit and sits one rank below it. When no further moves are possible the remaining packets are gathered up, reshuffled into new groups of four and redealt, and play continues in further deals until the layout either resolves completely or becomes permanently blocked. As a single player patience game rather than a competitive multiplayer card game, it belongs to the long European tradition of solitaire games built around foundation building and suit sequencing rather than trick taking or wagering.
