Whot!

Matching and Shedding Card Games

Whot! is a fast-paced shedding card game played with a nonstandard fifty-four card deck arranged in five suits: circles, crosses, triangles, stars and squares, rather than the usual four suits of a conventional deck. Players take turns playing a card that matches the suit or number of the card on top of the discard pile, or a special Whot card that can be played at any time and lets the player change the required suit or demand others draw extra cards, with the goal of being first to empty one's hand. Invented by William Henry Storey of Southend-on-Sea and trademarked in England in 1935, Whot! was one of the earliest commercially published games in the shedding-game family that later included Crazy Eights, Uno and Mau-Mau. The game found an enduring second life in Nigeria, where a localized edition became so widely played that it is now regarded as the country's national card game.
