Tenjiku shogi is a very large variant of shogi, the Japanese form of chess, that the Ludii record dates to the Edo period in Japan. It is played on a board of sixteen by sixteen squares with one hundred and fifty-six pieces. Its set takes in the pieces of the smaller sho shogi, chu shogi and dai shogi and adds a roster of powerful new ones. The great general slides any distance in a straight or diagonal line and jumps over anything in its way, the vice general, rook general and bishop general each have their own long-range moves, and the fire demon is notable because pieces on the squares beside it are said to perish by burning. Pieces promote up a ladder, so that a rook general can become a great general, a water buffalo a fire demon, and the free king a free eagle. The rules given for it are reconstructed from historical evidence.
