Stalingrad (wargame)

Modern Conquest and War Games

Stalingrad is a strategic-level board wargame published by Avalon Hill in 1963, widely regarded as one of the earliest commercial board wargames and the first to depict the Eastern Front of the Second World War. Two players, one commanding Germany and the other the Soviet Union, refight the twenty-four months of combat between June 1941 and May 1943 across a hexagonal map marked with cities, rivers, and swamps that shape movement and combat. Turns represent one month each and follow an alternating turn structure, with combat resolved by comparing attacking and defending strength into a ratio and consulting a Combat Results Table against a die roll. The German player wins by eliminating every Soviet unit or by holding Stalingrad, Moscow, and Leningrad simultaneously for two full turns; the Soviet player wins by preventing this. The game's abstracted but historically grounded system, simple compared to later wargames, helped establish conventions the hobby wargaming genre would build on for decades.
