Spartan: Tactical Warfare in the Hellenistic Age, 500-100BC

Modern Conquest and War Games

Spartan: Tactical Warfare in the Hellenistic Age, 500-100BC is a two-player tactical board wargame published by Simulations Publications, Inc. (SPI) in 1975 that simulates battles during the rise of Greece to the period of Roman rule. One player controls Greek, Macedonian or Spartan forces and the other controls their historic enemies, including Persians and Carthaginians, across seventeen scenarios that include the battles of Marathon, Plataea and Corinth. It was originally published by SPI as Phalanx, a game John Young designed in 1971, and was revised and republished as Spartan within a series called PRESTAGS, the Pre-Seventeenth Century Tactical Game System, alongside Chariot, Legion, Viking and Yeoman. The shared system is a simple alternating turn in which one player moves and fires and then the other does, with optional rules for panic, leadership, facing, melee and simultaneous movement, and Spartan adds rules for elephants and special leaders. It debuted at number six on SPI's Top Ten Bestseller List.
