Red Star/White Star: Tactical Combat in Europe in the 1970s is a two-player board wargame published in 1972 by Simulations Publications Inc. (SPI) during the Cold War. One player commands the Warsaw Pact forces invading West Germany, and the other commands the NATO defenders, Americans and West Germans. The title refers to the red star on Soviet tanks and the white star on American tanks. The game includes ten scenarios covering different parts of a hypothetical attack on West Germany. Each player turn runs through indirect fire and air strikes, movement and close assault, followed by defensive fire from the other side, and a full game turn represents six minutes and forty seconds of battle. Its units go down to platoons and its weapons reflect early 1970s technology, such as wire-guided missiles, rocket launchers and helicopter gunships, which led reviewers to call it highly complex. It was one of several tactical wargames designed by Jim Dunnigan for the young SPI, with graphic design by Redmond A. Simonsen. Critics compared it with PanzerBlitz and noted a perceived balance in favor of NATO.
