Little Big Horn: Custer's Last Stand

Modern Conquest and War Games

Little Big Horn: Custer's Last Stand is a two-player wargame published by TSR in 1976 that simulates the Battle of Little Big Horn. One player controls the forces of George Custer and the other controls the forces under Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, and the map is printed on oilskin rather than paper. The game was designed by Gary Gygax with interior art by Brian Blume. It appeared in the centennial year of the battle, when two other small publishers, Battleline and Attack Wargaming Association, brought out their own games on the same battle at Origins II, and all three sold poorly as interested gamers were divided between them. Waddingtons had already published The Battle of the Little Big Horn in 1962. The designer Richard Berg praised the oilskin map for durability but judged it poor to play on, and thought play somewhat predictable.
