Dunsany's chess

Chess-Family War Games

Dunsany's chess, also known as Dunsany's game, is an asymmetric chess variant in which Black has the standard chess army while White has 32 pawns. It was invented by Lord Dunsany in 1942 and published the same year in the August issue of Fairy Chess Review and in Joseph Boyer's Nouveaux Jeux d'Echecs Non-orthodoxes. White's pawns fill ranks one through four. Play follows regular chess with exceptions: Black moves first, and only Black's pawns may advance two steps on their first move. Black wins by capturing all 32 white pawns, while White wins by checkmating Black. Pawns still promote on the final rank, and stalemate occurs if White's pawns run out of moves. A similar game is Horde chess, introduced by Filip Rachunek in 2002.
