Dao is an abstract strategy game for two players designed by Ben VanBuskirk and Jeff Pickering and dated to 1999 by the Board Game Matcher listing. It is played on a four by four board with four pieces for each side, set up in a diagonal X formation from opposite corners. The page says the game has only one simple rule and three ways to win. Pieces slide in a straight line, including diagonally, as far as they can go with no jumping. Since sliding to the end of a line is compulsory, positioning matters more than speed, and the page warns that the unsociable tactic of trapping an opponent's piece in a corner loses. The compact board and short rules make it a quick contest of spatial planning.
