Troccas

Trick-Taking Card Games

Troccas is a Tarot card game played in the Surselva region of the Canton of Grisons (Graubunden) in eastern Switzerland, where the language is Romansh and most of the game terminology is Romansh too. It uses the 78-card Italian-suited Swiss Tarot pack of the design known as 1JJ, in which Juno and Jupiter replace the Pope and Popess, with 21 numbered trumps, four suits of 14 cards and a special card called the Fool. The standard game is for four players in fixed partnerships, with variations for three, five and six players. The exact history is uncertain, but the game is thought to have reached Switzerland from Italy in the seventeenth century. Local clubs and tournaments keep it popular in the valleys around Sedrun, Medel, Tujetsch and Ilanz.
