Cuarenta is a popular card game from Ecuador, played mostly by people from the mountains, including the cities of Cuenca and Quito. Its name means forty in Spanish, which is both the number of cards in the deck and the number of points needed to win. Two or four people play, the four forming two partnerships who sit across from each other. The deck is a standard 52-card pack with the eights, nines and tens taken out; those removed cards are used to keep score. Players capture cards from a layout on the table by matching equal cards or sequences, or by addition, and a play that captures nothing leaves the card face up on the table. Special announcements such as the ronda, three cards of one rank, score bonus points. The play is meant to be loud, exciting and full of bravado, even silly.
