Buraco is a Rummy-type card game in the Canasta family, played by four players in fixed partnerships. The aim is to lay down combinations, either groups of cards of equal rank or sequences of cards in the same suit, and there is a bonus for combinations of seven cards or more. It is a variation of Canasta that allows both standard melds and sequences. The game originated in Uruguay and Argentina in the mid-1940s. Its name derives from a word of lunfardo and Spanish meaning hole, applied to the minus score of either partnership. Buraco is also popular in the Arab world, specifically the Persian Gulf, where it is known as Baraziliya, meaning Brazilian, and a related variation called Burraco is played in Italy.
