Watten (card game)

Trick-Taking Card Games

Watten, regionally also called Waddn, Watteln or Wattlung, is a card game played mainly in Bavaria, Austria, Switzerland and South Tyrol, including Ladinia. It has several main variants: Bavarian, Bohemian, South Tyrolean (Stichwatten), Austrian Tyrolean, Kritisch and Blind Watten. It is usually played by four players, which is described as by far the most interesting form, but it can also be played by two or three players. The card game writer David Parlett is quoted as calling it hard to describe but fun to play and easy to learn. The several regional names and the six main variants show that the game exists in many local forms across the Alpine and Bavarian region where it is played.
