Viticulture (board game)

Modern Hobby Strategy Games

Viticulture is a worker placement board game published by Stonemaier Games in 2013, in which players operate a traditional Tuscan vineyard. Its design was crowdfunded through a Kickstarter campaign. Each round stands for one year of operation divided into four seasons. In spring a player picks a place on the wake-up track, which gives benefits and sets turn order, and in summer workers go to the shared board to plant vines, sell grapes, earn money from tours, build structures and play visitor cards. Autumn brings visitor cards that bend the rules, and in winter workers harvest fields, process grapes into wine, fill wine orders and hire an extra worker. Grapes and wine age as the years pass, and once a player reaches at least twenty victory points the game ends after that year is completed, with the highest score winning. On release it was praised for engagement and criticized for its element of luck, and expansions such as Arboriculture and Tuscany followed, along with an app version.
