Treasure of Unicorn Gold

Role-Playing Games

Treasure of Unicorn Gold is a fantasy role-playing adventure published by Metagaming Concepts in 1981 as the sixth title in its MicroQuest line, which used the rules of The Fantasy Trip. Written by the company's founder Howard Thompson, it is a programmed dungeon treasure hunt for one to six players, set in the same fantasy world as its predecessor Treasure of the Silver Dragon. Player characters try to learn the fate of the imprisoned dragon Etherion by visiting numbered locations on the map, collecting clues and meeting random encounters with beasts, warriors, traders, slavers and Toltec wizards, and a new rule keeps enemy groups at least as large as the party. Playing it requires copies of Melee and Wizard. It was sold in a digest-sized box holding a 44-page book, a map, counters and a die. The publisher hid clues to a real 10,000 dollar prize, a miniature golden unicorn, but nobody found it before Metagaming went out of business in 1983. Contemporary reviewers called the quest interesting but fairly tame.
