Mighty Empires

Modern Conquest and War Games

Mighty Empires was a board game published by Games Workshop to add a strategic campaign layer to Warhammer Fantasy Battle, so that the result of one battle would affect later ones, although it also included simple points-based rules for players without the miniatures game. Players build the map from 112 hexagonal tiles of coastal, highland, lowland and river valley terrain, placing them under rules that keep rivers and coasts realistic, then choose capital spots and roll for the settlements around them. Each campaign year runs through spring and autumn equinoxes, six summer months in which armies forage, scout and fight, and a winter bookkeeping phase for taxes, recruitment, diplomacy and building. Random winter events, including the Dragon Rage on extreme rolls, can raze tiles. It was re-released in 2007 with plastic pieces and reduced rules.
