Lupfen is a small trick-taking card game for three to five players, best with four, that is played by high-school students in Liechtenstein. It uses a short pack of twenty cards of the Swiss German pattern, five in each of the four suits of acorns, roses, shields and bells. Each player antes into a pool, and a player who agrees to be the Lupfer, or lifter, turns up a card from the stock to fix trumps and sets the price of the hand. The other players then pay in or drop out. Only three tricks are played, and each trick won earns a third of the pool, while an active player who wins none must pay in the pool amount again. A hand of three Unders wins every trick automatically.
