Gong Zhu

Trick-Taking Card Games

Gong Zhu is a Chinese trick-avoidance card game, an enlarged cousin of Hearts, popular among Go players relaxing between tournament games. The name is usually rendered "Chase the Pig": the queen of spades is the pig, a heavy penalty card, and players try to force it out by leading spades. Four or five people play with a standard 52-card pack, dealt anticlockwise, with no passing of cards and no trumps. The aim is to take or avoid particular scoring cards: the hearts carry penalties, the jack of diamonds (the sheep) is worth a bonus of 100, and the ten of clubs either gives 50 alone or doubles whatever else its taker wins. Before play a holder may expose the ace of hearts, queen of spades, jack of diamonds or ten of clubs to double its value. A player who reaches minus 1000 loses and, by tradition, becomes the pig.
