Colonial Diplomacy

Modern Conquest and War Games

Colonial Diplomacy is a board game closely modeled on the original game Diplomacy, published by Avalon Hill, with gameplay that is nearly identical to its parent game. Seven players each control a European or Asian power competing for colonial control of a map set in late nineteenth century Asia, moving units and negotiating alliances and betrayals with the other players in rounds of open diplomacy before writing down secret orders. As in the original Diplomacy, movement is turn based but every player's written orders are resolved simultaneously once negotiation for that turn ends, which sets the game apart from games such as Risk where turns are taken one player at a time. The game won an Origins Award recognizing it among the notable game releases of its year, and it remains best known today as a period and geographic reskinning of Diplomacy's core simultaneous negotiation and movement system rather than as a mechanically distinct design.
