Sid Meier's Civilization: The Boardgame is a strategy board game published by Eagle Games in 2002 and designed by Glenn Drover, in which up to six players guide a civilization from antiquity toward technological and military supremacy on a stylized map of Earth. Players expand their territory through exploration and settlement, wage wars, and research a technology tree spanning four historical eras, balancing military conquest against peaceful development. The design is based on the Civilization series of video games, particularly Civilization III, though Drover did not work on the video games directly; he was a sales manager at MicroProse during the original video game's development. Despite the shared name and Earth-based setting, the 2002 Eagle Games release bears no direct relation to Avalon Hill's 1980 board game Civilization, a title the video game series is said to have drawn inspiration from in turn.
