As-Nas

Casino and Scoring Card Games

As-Nas is a Persian betting card game for five players that is played with a special deck of 25 cards divided into five suits. Each player is first dealt two cards and must either bet or fold. Everyone still in the game then receives two more cards and faces a second round of betting, after which a fifth and final card is dealt and a last bet is made. The players who remain show their hands, and the highest ranking hand wins the pot. The ranking of hands is quite similar to that of Poker, and a session is usually put at about twenty minutes. The age of the game is disputed. Some writers say it was played in Persia in the sixteenth or seventeenth century, which would make it a forerunner of Poker, while others point out that no description of it appears before 1890 and that the name looks like the French word for ace rather than a Persian word, so it may simply be a Persian version of Poker played with existing cards.
