Ani-Mayhem

Collectible card game

Ani-Mayhem is a discontinued collectible card game built around anime characters and settings, published by the Upper Deck Company with production handled by the merchandising arm of Pioneer Animation, a division later folded into Geneon. It launched in 1996, riding the wave of interest in trading card games that Magic: The Gathering had set off earlier in the decade, and was designed by Jon Healy, Keith Pinster, and Josh Ritter with the stated goal of building an open-ended system letting characters from many different anime series interact within one shared card game. The first two card sets drew artwork and characters from a range of licensed anime properties, but the third and final set, released in 1997, narrowed its focus entirely to Dragon Ball Z. The game supported one to four players, with the original card game aimed at ages twelve and up and a simplified trading-card version aimed at children six and older. Incomplete rulebooks, inconsistent terminology between sets, and balance problems introduced by later expansions all worked against the game, and Upper Deck stopped publishing new material by 1997.
