Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei

Modern Conquest and War Games

Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei is a role playing video game and dungeon crawler originally released in 1987, developed by Atlus for the Famicom and published by Namco, alongside a separate personal computer version created by Telenet Japan with Atlus's assistance for systems including the PC-8801, MSX, X1 and FM77AV. It was later ported to the Super Famicom in 1995 and to mobile devices between 2004 and 2005. The story follows Japanese high school students Akemi Nakajima and Yumiko Shirasagi as they fight the forces of Lucifer after a demon summoning program unleashes them, with Nakajima revealed to be the reincarnation of the Shinto deity Izanagi and Shirasagi embodying the goddess Izanami. As the first entry in what became the Megami Tensei franchise, this game established the demon negotiation and dungeon exploration mechanics that would define one of Japan's most significant and long running role playing game series, with Atlus eventually securing full ownership of the property it had helped originate.
