Twenty-Five is a trick-taking card game that could be called the national card game of Ireland, played widely in rural pubs and at home. It uses a standard 52-card pack and is normally played by about five people, though from two to ten can take part, either as individuals or in pairs. One suit is chosen as trumps in each deal, and the ranking of the cards depends on the colour of the suit and on whether it is trumps, which seems odd until practice makes it second nature. Each trick is worth five points and the first player or side to reach twenty-five points wins. The basic game has bidding versions called 55, 110 and 220, played to those scores, and apart from the scoring it is more or less the same as the old games of Maw and Spoil Five.
