The Spanish Christmas Lottery, officially the Sorteo Extraordinario de Navidad and often called El Gordo, is a special draw of Spain's national lottery, Lotería Nacional, held every year on 22 December. It is run by the state-owned Loterías y Apuestas del Estado and is considered the biggest lottery draw in the world by total prize payout. Tickets carry five-digit numbers and are printed in many series, then sold as tear-off tenths called décimos, which clubs, workplaces, charities and families often buy together and split into shares. Lotería Nacional held its first draw on 4 March 1812, and the first Christmas draw was held in Cádiz on 18 December 1812. It became an extraordinary draw in 1818, and the name Sorteo de Navidad was first used officially in 1897.
