Monte bank, also called mountebank, Spanish monte and Mexican monte, and sometimes just monte, is a Spanish gambling card game that was known in the nineteenth century as the national card game of Mexico. It ultimately derives from basset, a game in which the banker, who is the dealer, pays out on matching cards. The word monte has also been used for a variety of other gambling games, especially varieties of three-card poker, and for the swindle known as three-card monte. This entry rests on the source lead only, so the layout, betting and payout rules of the game itself are left to later depth work.
