Gnau, also spelled Ngau or Ngao, is a card game that originated in Malaysia, and its name means ox. It uses one or more standard 52-card decks of French-suited playing cards and can be played casually or as a gambling game by at least two players. Every player, the dealer included, is dealt five cards with no discards or redraws, so the number of players is limited only by how many hands the cards can supply. A hand scores by finding three cards whose values add up to a multiple of ten, or three cards of equal value, and the two remaining cards then set the hand's strength, called its ox power. Face cards count as ten, and the strongest hands are five face cards, known as Five Dukes, and the ace of spades paired with a face card. Players compete against the dealer rather than against one another, and higher hands are paid at higher rates.
