Farkle, also spelled Farkel, is a family dice game whose rules vary widely from household to household. It is played with six dice, or five in some variations, together with paper and a pencil or pen to keep score. Many related games share its basic idea and go by other names, including Dix Mille, Ten Thousand, Cosmic Wimpout, Chicago, Greed, Hot Dice, Volle Lotte, Squelch, Zilch and Zonk. A version has been sold commercially since 1996 under the brand name Pocket Farkel by Legendary Games Inc. The game is believed to have reached North America on French sailing ships in the 1600s and has been handed down in families as a folk game ever since. Because of that folk tradition, the basic rules are well established while scoring and play differ a great deal between versions.
