Dungeon!

Modern Hobby Strategy Games

Dungeon! is an adventure board game designed by David R. Megarry and first released by TSR in 1975. Its board shows a simple six-level dungeon of hallways, rooms and chambers. Players move their pieces through it seeking to defeat monsters and claim treasure, with greater treasures and tougher monsters found on the deeper levels. Each player chooses a character class with different abilities, and the object is to be the first to return to the starting chamber carrying a set value of treasure. The game simulates some aspects of the Dungeons and Dragons role-playing game published in 1974, although Megarry had a prototype ready as early as 1972. Gary Gygax, Steve Winter, Jeff Grubb, Chris Dupuis and Michael Gray contributed to later editions, and the game has been described as the first adventure board game.
