Kingdom Builder

Modern Hobby Strategy Games

Kingdom Builder is a territory-building board game from 2011, designed by Donald X. Vaccarino with illustrations by Oliver Schlemmer, for two to four players aged eight and up. Each turn a player draws a terrain card and places three settlements on matching hexes, chaining them to their existing clusters whenever the board allows, so a kingdom grows outward from where it started. The board is modular and the scoring rules rotate, because a different set of Kingdom Builder cards is in play each game; the best plan therefore shifts from game to game, sometimes rewarding water adjacency, sometimes sector majorities, sometimes clustering near castles. Turns are quick and a game lasts about forty-five minutes. The game has been issued by publishers including Queen Games, Devir and Rebel, and the Board Game Matcher site describes it as a medium-weight game for players who enjoy spatial puzzles.
