Community PlanIt is a community planning platform that uses gamification to engage citizens in local decision making. It was designed by the Engagement Lab at Emerson College, launching in September 2012. The platform runs time limited games that let residents use their voice in community decisions while helping community leaders gather feedback from stakeholders who are otherwise hard to reach. Players earn coins by taking part in games; the coins both rank player performance and serve as a currency that lets players direct funding toward local community projects, with players holding more coins gaining greater influence over which proposals receive support. Each game ends with an in person community planning meeting called a Game Finale. Games have run from the neighborhood to the international level, including a 2013 game addressing youth unemployment in Moldova that drew coverage from The Guardian. The platform has been backed by the Engagement Lab at Emerson College, the Knight Foundation and the World Wildlife Fund.
