Vampire: The Masquerade

Role-Playing Games

Vampire: The Masquerade is a tabletop role-playing game created by Mark Rein-Hagen and released in 1991 by White Wolf Publishing. It was the first of several Storyteller System games for the company's World of Darkness setting. Players take the part of vampires, called Kindred or Cainites, living in a fictionalized gothic-punk version of the modern world, where they struggle against their own bestial natures, against vampire hunters and against one another. The game stressed narrative, drama, character development and what its authors called personal horror, with political intrigue and social interaction taking the place of the tactical combat and heroic adventure common in other games of its time. Its success led to the wider World of Darkness line, including Werewolf: The Apocalypse and Mage: The Ascension, and to spinoffs such as Kindred of the East and Vampire: The Dark Ages. Publication paused in 2004 in favor of the reboot Vampire: The Requiem, resumed in 2011 with a 20th Anniversary Edition, and reached a fifth edition in 2018. Related products include the live-action Mind's Eye Theatre rules, a collectible card game, video games and novels.
