Starfarers of Catan

Modern Hobby Strategy Games

Starfarers of Catan is a space-themed board game from 1999 that is loosely based on the Catan family of games. Klaus Teuber designed it as an official spin-off, and it was distributed by Kosmos in German and by Mayfair Games in English. Players take the part of Catanians who have mastered faster than light travel and fly fleets out from the Catan system to colonise unknown planets, while building trade ties with five alien peoples called the Green Folk, the Scientists, the Merchants, the Diplomats and the Travelers. Unlike the modular island board of the original game, it uses a fixed board of planets on a hexagonal grid, and each player commands a mother ship that is also used as a die and can be upgraded with freight rings, boosters, cannons and fame rings. The first player to reach fifteen victory points wins. Three or four people play the standard game, and expansions allow five or six.
