Midway is a board wargame published by Avalon Hill in 1991 that simulates the Battle of Midway in the Second World War. The 1991 release revised an earlier edition from 1964 and appeared as part of the Smithsonian American History Series, timed to the fiftieth anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The burden of play falls on the Japanese player, who must bring forces to bear on Midway Island, while the United States player has a smaller fleet but no geographical constraints on its naval movement. Most play takes place on duplicate hexagonal search boards, one per player, where each side sees its own forces fully and the opponent only through air and sea reconnaissance. Battles are then resolved on separate battle boards using double-sided cardboard counters for aircraft squadrons and ships. The designers, Lindsley Schutz and Larry Pinsky, built a double-blind hidden movement and search system, and the original game used a retired US Navy rear admiral who had commanded an air group at the battle as technical consultant.
