Dragon Quest is an adventure board game published by TSR in 1992 as a children's introduction to fantasy role-playing, using a simplified form of the Basic rules for Dungeons and Dragons. TSR conceived it as a commercial competitor to the popular fantasy board game HeroQuest. One player acts as Dungeon Master and runs prepared dungeon crawls through a castle on a fold-out grid board, while the others use pregenerated characters or create their own; the Dungeon Master reveals encounters as the party moves, and a party that reaches the end of an adventure gains a level. The box holds a rulebook with a book of adventures, six plastic miniatures and the same six cast in metal, die-cut cardboard monsters and an encounter deck. It was designed by William W. Connors, Walter E. Johnston IV and David Wise.
