DragonQuest is a fantasy tabletop role-playing game that Simulations Publications, Inc. (SPI) first published in 1980. It appeared at a time when the earliest fantasy role-playing games, Dungeons & Dragons among them, tied players to fixed character classes. DragonQuest took a different route and built its system around skills, which let each player customize a character more individually and gave a wider range of options than the class-bound designs of the first generation. Its source describes it as one of the first games to use a skill-emphasizing system in this way, which makes it a notable step in the design history of fantasy role-playing rules.
