Crossbows and Catapults

Dexterity and Physical Skill Games

Crossbows and Catapults is a tabletop game of physical skill that was first released in 1983 and has also been sold under the title Battlegrounds. Two sides, at first Vikings and Barbarians and in later editions other armies, each build a castle from plastic bricks, with walls and a tower, and then take turns trying to wreck the opposing fortress. Attacks are made with small rubber-band powered crossbows, which slide plastic disks across the playing surface, and with catapults, which fling the disks in a high arc. In the Tomy rules a player can win by knocking over the enemy tower, capturing every one of the opponent's disks, landing spies in the enemy courtyard, or reaching the treasure hidden beneath the tower. Lakeside, Alga (Brio), Base Toys, Tomy and Moose Toys have all published versions, and the newest edition, launched in 2007, sets Orcs against Knights.
