Ambush!

Wargame

Ambush! is a man-to-man tactical wargame developed by Eric Lee Smith and John Butterfield and published in 1983 by Avalon Hill under its Victory Games label. The game was notable on release for being exclusively designed for single-player play, using a programmed system of numbered rule paragraphs and scripted scenario booklets to stand in for a live opponent controlling the opposing side, an approach that addressed a common problem in wargaming where a player without a willing second participant had no way to play a full scenario. Each scenario in the series walks a lone player through a small-unit combat situation step by step, with the game's booklet revealing enemy positions, actions and outcomes as the player's own choices trigger them. Ambush! has been out of print since Avalon Hill, its publisher, was disbanded in 1998, though the system it introduced influenced later solitaire-oriented tactical wargame designs.
