1853 is a railroad board game in the 18XX family, designed by Francis Tresham and first published in 1989 by Hartland Trefoil, with later editions from Lookout Games and Mayfair Games. It is set in colonial India and is played by three to six people with a listed play time of 180 minutes, although a full session by experienced players can run five to seven hours. Players act as investors who build rail networks across the subcontinent while dealing with technical difficulties such as multiple track gauges and mountainous terrain, and they take part in contract bidding alongside stock manipulation. The result is a deep economic simulation aimed at experienced gamers who enjoy long, demanding games of company ownership and share trading.
