Eagles (wargame)

Modern Conquest and War Games

Eagles, subtitled Rome on the Rhine Frontier AD 15, is a two player board wargame published by Game Designers' Workshop in 1974, designed by Loren Wiseman, that simulates the Roman campaign led by Germanicus across the Rhine into Germania. In the game the Romans attempt to recover three Eagles, the honor laden standards of a Roman legion, from Germanic tribes. One player commands Roman legions seeking the captured Eagles, while the other directs Germanic tribes defending them; the Romans must move eight legions across the Rhine, while the German player uses the chieftain Arminius to mobilize tribes, which can either impede Roman progress or carry the Eagles into forest territory where the Romans attempt to corner them. Cover art was by John Harshman. Game Designers' Workshop was later acquired by Avalon Hill, which significantly revised and expanded the game in 1975 under the new title Caesar's Legions.
