Breakout & Pursuit: The Battle for France, 1944

Modern Conquest and War Games

Breakout & Pursuit: The Battle for France, 1944 is a two-player board wargame published by Simulations Publications Inc. (SPI) in 1972. It simulates the Allied breakout from the Normandy beachhead and the following pursuit of retreating German forces across France in the summer of 1944, one of the pivotal phases of the Western European campaign of World War II. One player controls the Allied armies pressing outward from Normandy while the other commands the German defenders attempting an orderly withdrawal. The game is built around two linked scenarios: a nine-turn Breakout scenario covering the initial rupture of the German defensive lines, and a seven-turn Pursuit scenario in which the German player tries to delay the Allied advance long enough for retreating units to escape across the Rhine. As an early SPI title, it reflects the company's operational-level approach to World War II history, translating a specific and dated campaign into turn-based movement and combat on a hex map rather than an abstract strategy exercise.
